  • Appeal for Burma (Myanmar)

    Uncategorized

One of the areas of ministry that Tentmaker Publications is involved in is helping belivers in Burma. Last year I had the privilege of visiting churches in Yangon (the capital) and also in Kalay (on the border of Chin province in the north west). The believers we met were wonderfully enthusiastic, generous and zealous for the Lord despite their overwhelming poverty. We have been actively involved in sending money to believers to help support orphanages and Bible colleges. You can imagine our distress upon hearing this weekend's news. So far the only message we have received is from a brother, Hung Ling, in a township on the outskirts of Yangon. This is his email:

    Dear Pastor Phil,
As you know about our situation, the cyclone hit Yangon violently. By the grace of God and your help in your prayer all our family, orphans and children are safe till today [he has three children plus over 15 orphans to look after]. But I am sorry to inform you that our home, church and the Victory lighthouse Orphanage are destroy by cyclone. Some of our co-workers outside Yangon and especially in the Irrawady Division, Pegu Division, Puding area are facing difficulties.
Pray for the finance to rebuild our home, and for food, clothes, medicine for those who lost their home and all their possessions. Please do consider our problem. We need your help, your prayer and help financially for all of us who are facing problems.
    Thank you.
Looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
    Hung Ling

Please pray for him and others such as David & Lun; Ling Choi & Angela (both couples running orphanages and, in David's case, a Bible school as well); Jeremaih, Chuana and Thauma lecturers at the Free Gospel Outreach Bible Collge in Yangon. We have heard nothing from them and fear that the devastation will have been severe. Most homes for the poor are made of bamboo.

If you would like to send support then money sent via Paypal to sales@tentmaker.org.uk with a note stating it is for Burma will be channeled to them. Alternatively UK cheques made out to Hartshill Bible Church and sent to our mailing address will also be sent on. It is very difficult to get money to Burma and so we physically take it in. We will be seeking in the near future a way of getting our funds there and will keep donors informed at all stages. All money received goes to the believers directly, there are no administrative charges at all. Thank you.

    New Publications

We are pleased to announce that we have obtained stock of many of the volumes of the exceedingly rare set and have also received permission to reprint the volumes that have been long out of print. Only a few hundred lovers of special books possess sets of this history of the English Bible. The books are commended by many scholars of distinction and are praised for their beauty, with hundreds of illustrations from authentic sources, besides noble bindings maroon and guilt, not to mention attractive dust jackets.

The volumes are as follows: (those in red are currently out of print, the others are available for £15 each, incl. post, which is the same as they were selling for in 1995.)

Our plan is to reprint the volumes that are out of print over the next year. Every endeavour will be made to match the original bindings but as the series was published over a period of 15-20 years the shade of the cloth used varied. What we can guarantee is that the volumes will match in size and the dustjackets will remain the same. We do not expect to be reprinting all the volumes so as to produce a totally new set as there are significant quantites of some volumes remaining whilst others are down to the last 30 copies. The volumes, though a set, are actually, in most cases, stand-alone volumes covering a particular subject or aspect of the history.

    Possible publications for 2008

    Pre-publication news

In addition to The Gospel Revealed to Job by Hulbert (due out in mid-March) and John Fawcett’s  Exposition of the Acts. 3 vols (Spurgeon says: “A fine series of expository discourses. Sometimes we differ.”), we are currently considering the following:

    1. E.W. Hengstenberg on Psalms

    2. E.W. Hengstenbrg, The Revelation expounded for those who search the Scriptures.  Translated by Patrick Fairbairn, D.D. 2 vols., 8vo. Edinb., 1851-52. S. 14/6. (Spurgeon says: “Highly esteemed by the best judges”).

    3. R Breckinridge, The Kingdom of God considered (2 vol.)

    4. James Hamilton, Sermons and Discourses.  (Receives the highest marks from Spurgeon on his work on Moses and his commentary on Ecclesiastes).

    5. R S Candlish, Reason and Revelation

    6. Jean Daille, Exposition of Philippians & Exposition of Colossians.  Translated by Rev. James Sherman. Imp. 8vo. Lond., 1841. (Spurgeon: “Very sweet and evangelical: after the French manner”).

    7. Robert Robinson on History of Baptism

    8. Sermons of James Ussher

We are checking if others are planning these and also assessing interest. Please let us know if you would be interested in any of these titles.
